George and I love going to the movies. As a couple, we are defined by our love of crisp cocktails, sweet treats, fostering creative living, and going to the movies. Last year we made an unofficial list of all the new releases we watched and shared it with our friends.
My top 3 from 2023 were Barbie, Poor Things, and Bottoms. I saw Barbie twice in theaters. Greta really knows how to make me cry using home footage of women existing. Bottoms is now my go-to comfort movie, and I play it without sound on all commercial flights. John Wick 4 was next on the list, followed by Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. George and I saw Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, wept heavily, and then ordered Dominos and drank Negronis. It was a perfect day.
I will see just about anything. Marvel movies. Animated movies. Even Twisters. I am bad at watching horror, because I scare easily. We wanted to see more than last year, but the writer’s strike created a lull in movies this summer, which I understood.
This year I saw 35 movies. The list includes movies I saw in theaters in 2024, or the movies released new on a streaming service in 2024. For example, Wonka was released in 2023, but I saw it in theaters in 2024, therefore it is on the list.
What follows is the list of all 35 movies I saw in 2024 ranked from least to most enjoyed. The list is divided into groups of three. The 3s represent movies I watched but didn’t love. They were maybe even considered bad. The 2s represent movies I enjoyed but were not my favorite. The 1s touched my heart or offered something new and exciting.
The Threes
35. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire
I don’t remember what happened in this movie. I do remember Paul Rudd was having a good time.
34. Mean Girls (the musical movie)
I did not think we needed another version of this. The feminism was a little better. I saw this on a plane. I did cry.
33. Venom: The Last Dance
They never know how to start a Venom movie. The first half hour is always bad.
32. Twisters
Glen Powell is hot, but I did not think this until I had a sex dream about him after seeing this movie.
31. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice
Most threes were sequels that didn’t need to happen, including this one.
30. Gladiator II
This was Denzel’s movie, but there were too many characters and Paul Mescal was a wash of a nice guy.
29. Fall Guy
Fun, but still stupid.
28. Love Lies Bleeding
This movie was hot, but the magical realism elements didn’t work for me.
27. Our Little Secret
The Lindsay Lohan Christmas movie. I had a great time. Ezra from Pretty Little Liars got to be the funny one, and Lindsay was fun.
The Twos
26. Hitman
It was fine. It wasn’t believable.
25. Brats – the documentary
I learned, from watching this, that Demi Moore is a witch. And why wouldn’t she be? She’s a Scorpio.
24. Dune 2
They barely made Timmy a villain. I don’t know why they are making these movies.
23. A Complete Unknown
Timmy is a great actor, but I have beef with biopics. It seems that filmmakers want to create human stories but are afraid they won’t bring in audiences. So, they sell out by making anticlimactic movies about someone famous. It was visually appealing and well-acted, but I am ready for this era of movies to be over.
22. Saturday Night
Another biopic, but Rachel Sennott is in this one, so it ranks higher.
21. Argylle
I liked this original story. I love Sam Rockwell. There’s a fun twist.
20. Deadpool & Wolverine
Entertaining.
19. Goodrich
I would have cut this movie by twenty minutes, made some structural adjustments. I did cry on an airplane for like the whole last half hour. I am not afraid to cry in public. Michael Keaton is compelling. Dad stuff always gets me.
18. Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F
Perfectly fun action movie.
17. The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare
Also, a perfectly fun action movie with some hotties.
16. Babes
A nice quiet story about friendship and motherhood. It was marketed as a comedy but was more sincere than humorous.
15. Challengers
They should have had a threesome.
14. Drive Away Dolls
Unique, strange, funny.
13. Lisa Frankenstein
An original idea, clever, and well executed.
12. Inside Out 2
I cried hard at this one, too. I really felt it captured The Awkward Phase.
The Ones
11. Wonka
Surprisingly lovely. Did we need a new Wonka? No, we didn’t, but this one was sweeter than the others.
10. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes
A visual feat. While I don’t know anything about these Planet of the Apes movies, this one was compelling and authentic.
9. The Iron Claw
I wept the whole time.
8. Skincare
A unique and exciting thriller.
7. Furiosa
This should have been thee blockbuster, but it seemed not be as excitedly received. Chris Hemsworth gives a dynamic performance.
6. Wicked
As messed up as 2024 was, I feel so lucky to exist during a time when feminist stories are being told with high-caliber sets, costumes, actors; are taken as seriously as Oscar nominated flicks and are as well-attended as superhero movies.
5. Civil War
This film shook me to my core. It was beautiful and upsetting at the same time.
4. My Old Ass
No one is talking about this movie. Everyone should be talking about this movie.
3. Janet Planet
I watched this the day after the election, and it was a balm on my wounded heart. So tender.
2. Problemista
I love Julio Torres. This was quirky. Funny. Original. Stop screaming at me.
1. Didi
George and I saw this on a Sunday morning at 9:30. A perfect coming-of-age film in the era of social media. It felt so real. I cannot believe everyone isn’t obsessed with this movie.
See you in 2025, where I intend to watch more movies that are good, mid, and bad.
